Boun Kabongyay festival

Savannakhet province and Atsaphon district invite everyone to this festival which will feature a procession of the Brou people wearing traditional dress and carrying structures made from banana leaves, known as ‘kabongyay’, which are over 15 metres long. You can also sample Brou food, and see and buy items made by local artisans.

Chinese New Year festival

The China Cultural Centre is holding events to mark Visit Laos-China Year 2019 and Chinese New Year. Activities will include acrobatics, wushu, a magician, handicraft demonstrations by Chinese artisans, photo exhibition, tea ceremony, book fair, quizzes and games about China, and Chinese food. Entrance is free but seats for special performances should be reserved by calling the China Cultural Centre on 021 931 510.
Where: National Culture Hall.
When: January 26-27, from 2pm-8pm. Performances start at 3pm.

Free freight and logistics training programmes

Those working or learning in the field of transport, energy and environment, ports, logistics associations or other related sectors are invited to apply for green freight and logistics training programmes. Full scholarships will be provided to a total of 30 participants (six each from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand). The scholarship covers travel, accommodation, meals and a daily subsistence allowance. The programme is organised by the Mekong Institute, with the support of the Republic of Korea through the Mekong-Republic of Korea Cooperation Fund. Japanese speech contest

All students are invited to compete in the Japanese speech contest, which has three categories: a one-minute speech, a 3-minute speech on a topic of your choice, and reading a story, as well as poster design. The winners will get a prize and a certificate, and the winner of the 3-minute speech will be given a return air ticket to Japan.
When: Applications accepted until January 27, 2019. The poster design contest is open until December 30, 2018.

Scholarships for study in India

The Embassy of India is offering scholarships for undergraduate, postgraduate courses and doctoral studies in the fields of IT, vocational training, business management, economics, archaeology, architecture, history, and other areas. Applicants are required to have a good knowledge of English. Those who have previously applied for any scholarship provided by the government of India are not eligible. Also on offer are 2 slots for Buddhist studies under a cultural exchange programme for the year 2019-2020.

Indonesian scholarship

Those interested in the language, art and culture of Indonesia are invited to apply for the Darmasiswa scholarship. The scholarship is a one year non-degree programme offered by the Indonesian government to foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relations with Indonesia to study Bahasa Indonesia and the arts and culture of Indonesia.

3rd Japanese Film Festival

The 3rd Japanese Film Festival will feature nine films carefully selected for Lao audiences. The festival is organised by the Japan Foundation Asia Centre and the Embassy of Japan. All the films are in Japanese but have Lao and English subtitles.

Blood donation for food victims

The National Blood Transfusion Centre in Vientiane invites everyone to donate blood to assist floodvictims in Attapeu province. Visit Tadxon waterfall for the Ancestor Festival

Tadxon waterfall is welcoming those who want some fun after giving alms at temples to celebrate the Ancestor Festival on September 24.
Visitors will be served free grilled chicken at picnic huts, made from chickens raised at the site. Activities include forest walks and a tour of the Chao Souphanouvong Cave, where President Souphanouvong and other Lao leaders took refuge after escaping from Phonkheng jail in 1959 during the Indochina war. The site has 111 huts, 40 guesthouse rooms, and 11 elephants providing rides. There is also a 3,700 metre cable car ride that takes visitors to a rocky hilltop.

Boun Vat Phou festival

Champassak provincial authorities invite everyone to this annual festival which is the largest in southern Laos and the highlight of the year in Champassak district. The three-day event includes a sound and light show, processions, chanting by monks, and praying. There is also an elephant procession, traditional dancing, and concerts.

World Press Institute Fellowship in USA

Vientiane international half marathon

This annual half marathon will be held in Vientiane once again. This is the fourth edition of the race and takes runners over 21-km, 10-km and 5-km routes. Registration fee is 120,000 kip for 21 km, 100,000 kip for 10 km, and 80,000 kip for 5 km.

Miss Vientiane contest

The Vientiane administration invites young ladies to enter this contest. Candidates must be aged 16-25, at least 160 cm tall, and not have applied previously. The winner will receive a gem-encrusted crown and other prizes.

Elephant festival

The annual Elephant festival returns with 70 elephants set to take part in activities including a beauty contest, almsgiving, and a baci ceremony. There will also be a street fair, cultural shows, a concert, and other events.

Girls and boys aged 13-17 are encouraged to learn Lao and international boxing styles, and kickboxing. Registration is free.
