Lao New Year celebrations

Everyone is welcome to attend any and all of the traditional activities mentioned below.
Colourful Nang Sangkhan procession, washing of Buddha images at temples, and building sand stupas by the river. There will also be cultural performances, concerts, sports contests and a singing contest, as well as a market fair selling a wide variety of products. Another feature of the

water festival is a parade with participants wearing traditional costumes.

Fashion design contest

Lao Fashion Week invites all designers to enter this contest, themed “Spring”. Applicants must be aged 17-25, have completed secondary school, and able to communicate in English. Five of the designers selected will receive 3 million kip to make their own

costumes to display at Lao Fashion Week 2018 on September 10.

Photo contest

ChampaMeuanglao magazine and Lao Airlines invite photographers of all backgrounds and experience levels to enter this competition. Send the best single images of your favourite place in Laos for a chance to win free flights to Hanoi, Chiang Mai, or LuangPrabang. Winning photographs will be displayed over a two-page spread in

ChampaMeuanglao magazine, and an exhibition of winning entries will be held at Kualao Restaurant, Vientiane.

Lao New Year fair

Huge array of products on sale plus activities including a children’s fashion show contest, stage performances, and games. Children who enter the fashion contest could win 100,000 kip in scholarship money.

Airport bus service temporarily closed

The Airport Shuttle Bus Service has announced that it will be temporarily closed during the Lao New Year holiday because it is expected that the service will not be able to follow its schedule due to traffic congestion during the Pi Mai Lao celebrations. The temporary closure will start on April 14 and continue till April 16. The shuttle bus service sincerely apologises for the inconvenience. For more information, call 030 5351 495.

Cover song contest 

Here’s your chance to enter a cover song contest with your rendition of “Het Dai Hai Pen Kheuy” and win 5 million kip. Participants must record a video or audio clip of themselves singing “Het Dai Hai Pen Kheuy” and send it to the Facebook page “Champa Studio”. Professional singers may not enter the contest.
When: Entries to be submitted by May 26. Champa Studio will announce the winners on May 31 after selection the three best couples.

Symbol contest

The Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) mechanism under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs invites designers to enter this contest to design a symbol. Applicants must be aged between 15 and 35, photos must be 21x29cm in size and painted by a computer system. The winner will receive 2,000,000 kip in cash and the symbol will be used in the 3rd Mekong-Lancangleaders conference.

The Red Thread art exhibition

i:cat gallery invites you to an exhibition by two British artists, Jamie Lowe and Victoria Carmen Jones. “The Red Thread” exhibition showcases the work of both artists who have lived and worked in Asia for a significant period of time. They are also art teachers at Vientiane International School.

Lao New Year Party

The Beerlao Music Zone water festival event features international and Lao DJs and performers. Don’t miss this feast of exciting music and fun activities. Entrance is free and open to people aged 18 and above.

Lao New Year concert, Vangvieng

A Lao-Thai concert will take place over Lao New Year, presented by the TVP band. On stage will be Lao performers and Thailand’s PhetSaharath and KoungSouphaphone. There will be free parking and more than 1,000 free gifts.

Canadian scholarships

The Canada-Asean Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) programme provides students and researchers from member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) with short-term exchange opportunities for study or research in Canadian post-secondary institutions at the college, undergraduate and graduate levels.

Indonesian scholarships

The government of the Republic of Indonesia in Vientiane is offering the Kemitraan Negara Berkembang/Developing Countries Partnership Scholarships (Bachelor and Master) for Lao citizens. Applicants must complete the online application process and get a recommendation letter from the Embassy.

Charity workshop to support school construction

The owner of the Thaenhak Wedding Studio, MrVilasakSengphetmany (Fook), is holding a photo workshop on the theory and practice of photography. Participants will pay 50,000 each which will go towards construction of a school in Hongsa district, Xayaboury province. The first 50 applicants will receive a T-shirt and souvenirs from Nikon Sales Thailand and the chance to meet Miss International Laos 2017 PhounesupPhonnyotha and the Miss Laos 2013 runner-up PiyamatPhoumpaseuth.

The Ministry of Finance has launched the telephone hotline number 1519 and welcomes public feedback. Earlier, the Prime Minister's Office launched the telephone hotline number 1516. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has opened the hotline number 1510 while Electricite du Laos has opened a
call centre with the phone number 1199.
