Capital marks World Cleanup Day, Green Vientiane campaign
Students joined officials from schools, university and various organisations on Saturday morning to clean along the capital’s main roads marking the 11th anniversary of World Cleanup Day and the Green Vientiane project.
More than 3,000 people took part in the cleaning which concentrated on roads in the three districts of Xaythany, Xaysettha and Sisattanak.
Authorities believe the Green Vientiane project is an important initiative to improve the local environment in the city while setting an example to children and helping to promote socio-economic development.
Green Vientiane activities are held in the capital each year, while World Cleanup Day (September 21) is a global social action programme aimed at combating the global solid waste problem with many countries participating.
Deputy Secretary General of Lao Youth Union, Mr Bounta Thephavong led youth union officials and students cleaning the road in front of the National University of Laos (NUOL).
“World Cleanup Day aims to have five percent of the global population from more than 150 countries participating in cleaning up their environment,” Mr Bounta said.
Next year, the youth union planned to join forces with other organisations to expand the community spring-cleaning to other roads in the city, he added.
