Malaysian students lead volunteer project in Laos
Lao and Malaysian student volunteers will be serving the community in Laos for two weeks under the 7th Joint Students Volunteer Mission conducted by the Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa (YSS) Student Volunteers Foundation.
Under the project, 70 Malaysian student volunteers from higher learning institutions in Malaysia and 50 Lao student volunteers from the Bankeun Teacher Training College in Vientiane province will take part in various activities.

YSS chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said all of the student volunteers will be serving the community in five selected locations in Phonhong and Viengkham districts of Vientiane province.
This is the seventh time the Student Volunteers Foundation has organised volunteer activities in Laos since 2013. This is the fifth year of the programme under the five-year agreement provided for in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the YSS and Laos’ Ministry of Education and Sports, which was signed in 2015.
The Student Volunteers Foundation has served the community in Laos together with Student Volunteers in Laos through the support of Laos’ Ministry of Education and Sports, the Embassy of Malaysia to Laos, and the Malaysian Business Chamber of Laos.
Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said “The Student Volunteers Foundation hopes that the student volunteers involved in this mission will be able to inspire and become role models for local communities, especially schoolchildren who are aligned with the vision of the MOU.”
Student volunteers will run ‘Fun Learning’ activities that will focus on the use of English language, build school toilets, construct volleyball courts, repair school furniture and facilities and carry out various other activities.
The Ambassador of Malaysia to Laos, Mohd Aini Atan, and other officials attended an event to kick start the volunteer programme.
