NUOL hopeful of more scholarships from Korean firm
The Faculty of Social Sciences at the National University of Laos (NUOL) and the Certified Public Tax Accounting Company of the Republic of Korea are set to continue their cooperation in NUOL’s educational development in the 2020-2021 academic year.
The South Korean firm has supported the university for several years by providing scholarships for students from the faculties of Social Sciences, Architecture and Letters.
Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Bounthavy Sosamphanh, said “Next month, we will hold discussions with Mr Kim Ho Kyung, consultant to the Certified Public Tax Accounting Company, about continuing scholarships for social science students as well as offering them to other NUOL faculties.”
Assoc. Prof. Bounthavy said Mr Kim’s scheduled visit to Laos had been postponed because of the international Covid-19 outbreak.
The company presented scholarships worth 60 million kip to 30 Faculty of Social Sciences students last December who will finish their studies in August. This followed the provision of 45 scholarships in 2018.
The Faculty of Social Sciences has 2,250 students taking bachelor degree courses over five years, with another 200 enrolled in their master’s programme.
The accounting company has previously funded the repair of toilets at the faculty as well as field trips for lecturers and students to Vientiane province.
From October 2018 to June 2019, the company ran a competition in which students had to answer the question “What should poor people do for their betterment?” and gave cash prizes to the winning students.
There was great interest in this contest, and 6,413 lecturers and students from various faculties participated.
