Save the Children gives boost to early education in Luang Prabang
More than 3,000 disadvantaged kindergarten and early primary school children in 27 villages of remote Nambak and Phonthong districts in Luang Prabang province are set to benefit from a school assistance project.
The Luang Prabang provincial Education and Sports Department and Save the Children are cooperating in a project aimed at disadvantaged children aged 3-5 in the two districts.
Under the project, taking place from 2019 to 2020, Save the Children Hong Kong is funding classroom repairs at schools, as well as providing educational and teaching equipment.
The provincial Education and Sports Department and Save the Children signed an agreement on the project on August 19, ahead of the start of the new school year.
Currently, there are 1,993 pre-schoolers and 11,494 registered children in kindergarten, and 6,125 Year One primary school children in Luang Prabang province. A provincial Education and Sports’ official, Mr Bounseng Philavanh, said thousands of disadvantaged children in the province suffer from adequate funding and equipment at their schools.
Mr Bounseng said it was hoped that assistance for disadvantaged children in these districts could be continued in the future after the current project ends in 2020. In 2017 and 2018, Australian organisations helped support education in some districts of Luang Prabang province.
