Celebrating 76 years of the Lao People’s Army: A legacy of national pride and progress
The Lao People’s Army (LPA) marked its 76th anniversary on January 20, celebrating a legacy of resilience, dedication and achievements in safeguarding Laos’ independence and development.
Over the decades, the army has transformed from a revolutionary force into a modern institution, playing a pivotal role in Laos’ history.
Established on January 20, 1949, the LPA played a crucial role in Laos’ fight for liberation, leading the resistance against foreign aggressors during the Indochina War. After years of struggle and unwavering dedication to the revolutionary cause, victory was finally achieved with the establishment of the

Lao People’s Democratic Republic (LPDR) in December 1975.
Retired army veteran Captain Mrs Bouakham Phommachan, a national heroine, was cited in a recent Facebook post by Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Dr Sourioudong Soundara, who wrote that Mrs Bouakham joined the revolutionary movement in 1960, motivated by the oppression of her people.
Initially a supporter in Huaphan province, she mobilised locals, transported supplies, and gathered intelligence for the Lao Free Front.
Her commitment led her to cook and transport food for Lao and Vietnamese soldiers during the liberation of Nam Neun (1962-1964).
In 1965, she became a member of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and later helped build the Women’s Union in Xieng Khuang province. Despite numerous challenges, including hard fought battles like the 1969 Plain of Jars campaign, she organised and led women’s platoons, showcasing leadership and resilience.
Throughout her years of service to the Party and country, she held various posts, including political director and policy head, before retiring in 1989. Her contributions earned her numerous honours, including freedom and victory medals, recognising her heroism and dedication to Laos’ liberation and development.
This is an example of how both male and female Lao people participated in the national liberation and the struggle to defend their homeland against foreign aggressors in past decades.
In peacetime, the Lao People’s Army has been a cornerstone of national unity, ensuring the defence of Laos’ territorial integrity and addressing cross-border threats. Its efforts have been vital in maintaining internal stability and fostering an environment conducive to development.
Following the establishment of the LPDR, the army shifted its focus to rebuilding the nation. Soldiers cleared unexploded ordnance, supported infrastructure projects, and played an important role in developing remote areas by building roads, bridges, and other essential facilities.
Over the years, the LPA has embraced modernisation, improving its organisational structure and training. It has established partnerships with neighbouring nations, particularly Vietnam, other ASEAN countries, and China, to enhance defence capabilities and promote regional security.
The army has been at the forefront of disaster relief efforts, assisting communities affected by floods, storms, and other emergencies. It also contributes to poverty reduction, healthcare delivery, and education initiatives in rural areas, showcasing its commitment to societal welfare.
One example was the participation of military personnel in efforts to assist the people of Sanamxay district in Attapeu province in 2018, after the collapse of a dam at the Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy hydropower plant on July 23.
The army has also participated in global peacekeeping missions and fostered ties with international organisations, strengthening its role in promoting security and stability in Southeast Asia.
With this year marking the 76th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People’s Army, the Ministry of National Defence organised a series of nationwide activities to honour this milestone.
Military and mass sports competitions took place at various sports stadiums in Vientiane and provinces.
The Lao People’s Army has remained a steadfast pillar of national independence, unity, and progress. Its victories and achievements over the past 76 years exemplify its unwavering commitment to safeguarding Laos and fostering development.
As Laos celebrates this historic occasion, the nation honours the sacrifices and contributions of the LPA, recognising its role in securing freedom, stability, and prosperity for generations to come.
The anniversary stands as a testament to the LPA’s enduring legacy and signals a bright future in building a peaceful and secure Laos.
