Sikhottabong stupa festival returns as cultural highlight in Khammuan
The annual Sikhottabong stupa festival, which takes place from January 29 to February 2, will once again bring a vibrant atmosphere to Khammuan province, offering visitors a chance to experience one of central Laos’ most meaningful religious traditions alongside the local way of life.
At the heart of the celebrations stands Sikhottabong Stupa, one of the most revered Buddhist monuments in Laos. Located in Thakhaek district, the provincial capital of Khammuan, the ancient stupa is closely associated with the historic Sikhottabong Kingdom, which once flourished along the Mekong River.
For generations, the stupa has been a spiritual centre for Lao people and is believed to enshrine sacred relics of the Buddha, making it a place of deep devotion and national pride.
Although this year’s programme is more modest than in previous years, the festival continues to preserve its spiritual essence while welcoming visitors from across the province and beyond.
Key activities include morning alms-giving ceremonies, where locals and visitors can make merit by offering food to monks, as well as traditional sports competitions that reflect the community’s strong sense of unity and heritage.
One of the highlights is the wax castle (prasat phueng) procession, a visually striking ceremony symbolising faith and respect for Buddhism. Cultural performances featuring local music and dance will also take place, showcasing the artistic traditions of Khammuan’s diverse communities.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, a market fair will be set up around the stupa, allowing visitors to sample regional food items, purchase handicrafts, and browse locally made products.
The combination of religious rituals, cultural activities and community markets makes the festival an attractive destination for travellers seeking an authentic Lao experience.
Khammuan province is also home to numerous natural wonders, especially the many limestone caves that are secreted within its rocky outcrops. Sites such as Kamphaengyak, also known as the Giant Wall, and the Sangsou and Nam Sanam waterfalls, should also be on travellers’ itineraries during a visit to the province.
