PM thanks Thailand for cave rescue assistance

Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has expressed profound gratitude to Thailand for its support in the search for seven Lao citizens trapped in a cave in Xaysomboun province, five of whom were located and brought to safety.
In a message to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of the Kingdom of Thailand, PM Sonexay conveyed his appreciation on behalf of the government and people of the Lao PDR for Thailand’s assistance during the emergency situation.
His message read: “On behalf of the government and people of the Lao PDR, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand for authorising the Sai Than Association, the Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin unit, and the Sawang Rescue unit, together with their teams, to assist in the search and rescue of seven Lao citizens who became trapped in a cave in Longchaeng district, Xaysomboun province, following heavy rainfall beginning on May 18.”
“The Lao government holds in high regard the prompt assistance and tireless dedication of these rescue teams, working alongside the Lao PDR rescue units and international experts from May 24 onwards, which resulted in the safe rescue of five trapped survivors on May 29-30, 2026.”
“I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Government and people of Laos, as well as the families of those affected, to express our deepest gratitude and commendation to all rescue personnel for their professionalism and selfless dedication in this critical mission.”
“This humanitarian assistance reflects the bonds of friendship and excellent neighbourly cooperation, as well as the strategic partnership for growth and sustainable development between our two countries and peoples — a partnership that is continuing to flourish and bear fruit to this day.”
“I also take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to Your Excellency and your family for good health, happiness, and every success in your distinguished duties,” he said.
The message highlights the strong friendship and longstanding cooperation between Laos and Thailand. However, the rescue mission was officially terminated on Saturday.
Following an in-depth assessment by experts, the severe weather and hazardous environmental conditions were deemed no longer safe for rescue personnel to continue the search.
Consequently, the mission concluded with two individuals tragically remaining unlocated. This major operation has garnered widespread public attention and will be etched in history.
On Saturday, following the conclusion of the two-week rescue mission, the government awarded national and provincial commendations to the individuals and organisations that contributed to the operation.
