Japan provides US$61 million to strengthen forest management

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Japan International Cooperation Agency have signed a sub-agreement worth US$61 million for the Forest and Landscape Management and Livelihood Improvement in Southern Lao PDR (GFLL-SL) Project.
The agreement signing ceremony on August 24 was attended by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Mr Kikeo Singnavong.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Kikeo said the project will be implemented in the five southern provinces of Savannakhet, Salavan, Champasak, Xekong and Attapeu.
The project aims to strengthen the national REDD+ mechanism, improve sustainable forest and landscape management alongside livelihood development, and ensure effective project administration and management.
Particular emphasis will be placed on ensuring the meaningful and inclusive participation of ethnic groups, women and vulnerable communities in the management, protection and sustainable use of natural resources.
Executive Vice President of JICA, Ms Mitsui Yuko, said the GFLL-SL Project represents an important contribution to Laos’ national efforts to achieve sustainable development, protect its rich forest resources, and fulfil its commitments under global agreements on climate change.
The project is expected to strengthen cooperation between Laos and Japan in sustainable forest management, climate action and community livelihood development, while supporting the long-term conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in southern Laos.
