Heavy rain raises flood, landslide risk across Laos

More rain is forecast across Laos this week, with thunderstorms and strong winds predicted in some areas, increasing the risk of more flooding and landslides.
According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the southwest monsoon will remain moderate to strong and affect all parts of Laos.
People are advised to remain vigilant, take precautions and closely monitor weather forecasts, and be ready to cope with extreme conditions if necessary.
Rain is forecast for the northeastern provinces of Phongsaly, Huaphan and Xiengkhouang, while heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely in Oudomxay, Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang and Xayabouly provinces in the northwest.
Thundery showers are also forecast for the central provinces of Vientiane, Xaysomboun, Bolikhamxay, Khammuan and Savannakhet.
Similar conditons are forecast for the southern provinces of Champasak, Salavan, Xekong and Attapeu, and the capital Vientiane.
The weather bureau also issued a weather warning for the Mekong River and its tributaries.
The southwest monsoon is expected to strengthen through late September and into early October. At the same time, a tropical cyclone is forecast to move into the central South China Sea, which could have direct and indirect impacts and bring heavy rain for several days.
These conditions could lead to landslides and flash floods in some areas, particularly in central and southern Laos.
The department urges everyone to be on their guard and prepare for changing weather conditions that could potentially affect lives and property.
Those planning to travel through mountainous areas are advised to check weather forecasts, road conditions and the condition of their vehicles before setting out on a journey.
