Party meeting mulls solutions to chronic national challenges

Party Secretary General and President Thongloun Sisoulith has instructed members of the 12th Party Central Committee to scrutinise national challenges in depth and propose clear and effective measures to address them, at an extraordinary plenary meeting which opened on Monday.
The five-day meeting, which runs from September 28 to October 2 at the Office of the Party Central Committee, takes place amid a range of economic, financial and social challenges that are affecting people’s livelihoods, productivity and business activities.
In his opening remarks, Mr Thongloun called on Party Central Committee members to strengthen their political responsibility, devote their intellect to studying and analysing each issue in depth, and contribute objectively to discussions so that recommendations are appropriate and targeted.
According to the Pasaxon Daily, the meeting will hear reports and study and discuss several important documents aimed at implementing the resolution adopted by the 12th Party Congress.
Key issues include improving and developing economic sectors towards building an independent and self-reliant economy, raising the quality of human resources to meet development needs under new conditions, and formulating policies on the use of intellectuals under new conditions.
The meeting will also hear a government report on progress in addressing the illegal import of vehicles and illegal mining operations, as well as discuss a number of other important matters.
Laos is currently battling with the aftermath of monsoon floods, African swine fever, illegal exploitation of natural resources, telecommunication scams, proliferation of illegal weapons, smuggled vehicles, drug trafficking, and other crimes and harmful activities that affect the productive development of society.
These issues have had a negative effect on people’s livelihoods and placed additional pressure on civil servants, the military and police, according to information circulated at the opening of the meeting.
Mr Thongloun called on meeting participants to promote intra-Party democracy, strengthen the link between theory and practice, and encourage innovation in the Party’s leadership.
He expressed confidence that the meeting would help create breakthroughs and bring strong and proactive changes in the implementation of the resolution adopted by the 12th Party Congress, with the aim of producing concrete results.
