Census officials question a local resident about her living conditions.

Observers deployed to monitor nationwide census

The Lao Statistics Bureau and the United Nations Population Fund have deployed 36 independent observers across the country to monitor the collection of data for the 5th Population and Housing Census.
The observers are travelling to all provinces to assess the situation on the ground and ensure that the data being collected is accurate.
The census is taking place from November 3 to December 28. The consolidated findings will be reported to the Lao Statistics Bureau and other government bodies to identify the progress made in people’s standard of living, the challenges that exist, and areas that need improvement.
The Population and Housing Census takes place every ten years. This year’s census - the fifth since 1985 - will provide essential data for the 10th five-year National Socio-Economic Development Plan, the Sustainable Development Goals, and strategies that benefit young people, women, and people with disabilities.
Acting Director General of the Economic and Social Statistics Department of the Lao Statistics Bureau, Head of the Central Population and Housing Census Office, Mr Lienthong Souphany, said the deployment of independent observers is important for ensuring the accuracy of the first census to be conducted digitally.
UNFPA Representative Dr Bakhtiyor Kadyrov said independent observation supports accuracy, transparency, and public trust in the digital census process.
The census is supported by China, Australia, Luxembourg, Switzerland and the United States. UNFPA and the Lao Statistics Bureau expressed appreciation to all partners for their cooperation in ensuring that every individual and community is reflected in national planning.
