1,000 MW solar plant begins electricity generation in Oudomxay

A 1,000-megawatt solar power plant in Xay district of northern Oudomxay province, built by CGN Energy Technology Laos Co., Ltd. (CGN), has been officially commissioned, strengthening Laos’ clean energy capacity and supporting regional socio-economic development.
The inauguration ceremony, which took place on Friday, was attended by Vice Chairman of the Oudomxay Provincial Administration Committee, Khamseng Aly, and Deputy Director of CGN Energy Technology Laos Co., Ltd., Zheng Yong, along with representatives from relevant authorities and project stakeholders.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Khamseng Aly described the commissioning as a significant milestone for both the province and the nation, noting that the launch coincided with celebrations to mark the 105th anniversary of the birth of President Kaysone Phomvihane.
“Today is a historic day, marking the official start of electricity production, which coincides with the 105th birth anniversary of President Kaysone Phomvihane, the beloved leader of the Lao people,” he said.
With a total installed capacity of 1,000 megawatts, the project is among the largest clean energy developments in Laos and is expected to become a model for future renewable energy projects.
Provincial authorities say the power plant will contribute to the nation’s energy security while supporting Laos’ transition towards sustainable development.
Beyond power generation, the project has brought new technology and training opportunities to local communities, particularly young people, while creating employment and income for members of various ethnic groups in Oudomxay province.
Since construction began on December 18, 2024, CGN has carried out a range of social responsibility activities in the area. These include funding the renovation of the secondary school in Xay district, as well as contributing to the construction of bridges, roads and other essential infrastructure.
Mr Khamseng said inspections conducted during the construction phase confirmed that the company had complied with environmental protection measures in line with national regulations.
He expressed the hope that cooperation between local authorities and CGN would continue to grow, further strengthening the energy and industrial sectors in Oudomxay province in the years ahead.
