Govt urges calm over Cambodia-Thailand border clashes
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on the governments of Cambodia and Thailand to show restraint and resolve their border clashes peacefully, emphasising the message in meetings with the countries’ top diplomats in Laos.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms Phongsamouth Anlavanh met separately with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Cambodia to Laos, Mr Hulkrang Phanang, and Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Royal Thai Embassy, Ms Jirusaya Birananda.
During the meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the deputy minister conveyed the government’s deep concern over the armed clashes taking place along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
She said Laos, as a neighbour sharing borders with both countries, urges the two sides to exercise restraint and avoid the use of force, guided by goodwill and friendship as fellow members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Ms Phongsamouth called on Cambodia and Thailand to comply with the bilateral agreement signed in Kuala Lumpur on October 26 and to use existing mechanisms to seek peaceful solutions.
She warned that the ongoing clashes could spread and would not benefit any of the parties involved.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued on December 11 also expressed concern over the fighting along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
The statement said Laos calls on both sides to refrain from the use of force, revive the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration signed on October 26, and work through peaceful means to resolve their differences.
