BRT trial suspended as government orders design revamp
 
The Vientiane Sustainable Urban Transport Project (VSUTP) has announced the indefinite suspension of the trial operation of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, following a government order to redesign the bus lanes and the overall system.
The suspension follows an evaluation of trial BRT operations that began on November 7, including free services provided during the That Luang Festival. The assessment found that public response was highly positive, with strong passenger turnout and growing interest in the new transport system.
However, the trial phase also revealed several critical issues requiring urgent attention. These include shortcomings in the road network and supporting infrastructure, limitations in bus operational flow and manoeuvr ability, inadequacy of drivers’ skills, and gaps in the BRT command, control, and dispatch systems.

To address these concerns the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has suspended the rollout of the project until further notice, allowing time for redesign, technical adjustments, and compliance with required standards.
In a related move, the ministry has also ordered the removal of concrete curbs installed along BRT lanes throughout Vientiane. Under the directive, all such curbs must be dismantled by the end of this month. The ministry has instructed the Vientiane Department of Public Works and Transport, in coordination with the VSUTP, to replace the curbs with painted lane markings as part of a broader design improvement.
The ministry cited concerns over traffic safety, efficiency, and long-term urban mobility as key reasons for the change.
It said the curb removal must be carried out carefully to minimise disruption to traffic flow. The costs associated with dismantling the curbs will be covered by the government or the project’s budget.
 The ministry also warned that if international donor funding is discontinued, the project’s accounts must be promptly finalised and closed to prevent lasting negative impacts on Vientiane’s traffic situation.
 Officials say the measures reflect a shift towards more flexible and less intrusive traffic management solutions, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to developing a safe, efficient, and sustainable public transport system for the capital.
