Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, together with other Lao and Vietnamese dignitaries, share in the opening ceremony of a new road leading to the Vietnamese border.

New Bolikhamxay-Vietnam road link officially opened

A newly completed 35-kilometre road linking the centre of Xaychamphon district in Bolikhamxay province with the Nam On border crossing between Laos and Vietnam was officially opened on March 12.
Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone led the Lao government delegation attending the opening ceremony, which took place in Xaychamphon district and marked the completion of the asphalt-concrete and double-bituminous surface treated road.
The new road is expected to facilitate cross-border transport and promote socio-economic development in the border area.
The Lao delegation also included the Head of the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr Bouakhong Nammavong, and Bolikhamxay provincial Party Secretary, Dr Sonethanou Thammavong.
The Vietnamese delegation was led by the Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos, Nguyen Minh Tam, and included senior officials from Nghe An province.
The Xaychamphon-Nam On road includes two bridges. The construction cost of 260 billion kip was financed by the Viet-Lao Power Investment and Development Joint Stock Company, which is also the investor in the Truong Son wind power project cluster in Xaychamphon district.
The new road is expected to improve transport links and bolster trade and tourism between Laos and Vietnam. It will facilitate the movement of goods and people in the border area, contributing to socio-economic development, regional integration, and enhanced cross-border collaboration.
Officials say the project is a successful model of bilateral cooperation, combining infrastructure development with energy investment initiatives.
The new access route to the Vietnamese border is seen as a key step in supporting both national development and local community growth.
Prime Minister Sonexay said continued collaboration in infrastructure projects of mutual interest would further deepen the longstanding friendship and partnership between the governments and peoples of Laos and Vietnam.
