Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone chairs a consultative meeting on Friday.

PM leads talks on fuel reserves amid slowing supply from Middle East

The government has discussed a range of short- and long-term measures to address fuel supply concerns and rising prices, as global market instability continues to affect fuel imports and domestic supply.
A fourth meeting to consider ways to tackle a possible fuel shortage took place on March 13, chaired by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.
The meeting was attended by the deputy prime minister overseeing economic affairs and international cooperation, along with ministers, deputy ministers, representatives from Party and mass organisations, and business leaders.
Participants reviewed the fuel supply situation and pricing in light of instability in the Middle East, which has led to sharp increases in the price of fuel and a reduction in import volumes.
The meeting discussed the status of fuel imports, reserves and distribution, as well as the impact of the rising price of fuel on the cost of goods and services.
Participants also deliberated on mitigation measures and policies to strengthen the management of fuel imports, distribution and pricing.
Key issues discussed included ways to quickly obtain fuel from diverse sources, as well as imposing tight controls on fuel reserves and distribution.
Participants also considered measures to improve domestic fuel administration to ensure continuous supply and accessibility.
In addition, the meeting discussed policies to promote alternative energy solutions, including encouraging the use of electric vehicles and expanding electric public transport in urban and residential areas.
The need to provide accurate and up-to-date information was also referenced, to ensure the public fully understands developments and changes as they occur, along with associated government measures.
Officials also suggested forming a dedicated taskforce to address fuel-related challenges and coordinate efforts among relevant ministries, organisations and local authorities to respond to changes in fuel supply.
More consideration will be given to the ideas proposed before they become legally binding, to be followed by effective and timely implementation by the relevant entities.
