UK to expand support for UXO clearance, healthcare during Minister’s visit to Laos
The United Kingdom will announce additional funding for the clearance of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Laos during the visit to the country on Thursday of UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Seema Malhotra, reinforcing Britain’s continued support in addressing the humanitarian and development impacts of UXO contamination.
According to a press release issued by the British Embassy Vientiane, Minister Malhotra will visit Laos on May 28 as part of efforts to strengthen practical and forward-looking cooperation between the United Kingdom and Laos.
A highlight of the visit will be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on health cooperation, which is expected to further strengthen healthcare systems and build long-term resilience.
Ms Malhotra is scheduled to meet senior counterparts from the Lao Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to advance cooperation on shared priorities, including sustainable economic growth and the safety of citizens abroad.
The visit follows the Global Partnerships Conference, a summit co-hosted by the UK that called for a reset in the way international partnerships are used to address global challenges and prevent crises.
The UK government said its modern development approach aims to move beyond traditional aid by working alongside partner countries to give them greater control over their own futures.
Speaking ahead of the visit, Minister Malhotra said she was pleased to make her first official trip to Laos, building on the 70 years of diplomatic relations celebrated by the two countries last year.
“In a more uncertain global environment shaped by conflict, economic disruption, and climate pressures, trusted partnerships matter more than ever,” she said.
“That’s why I am here to deepen our partnership focused on supporting inclusive and sustainable growth, in line with the UK’s modern approach to development.”
Alongside official engagements, the Minister will also meet Chevening Scholars and alumni, highlighting the growing people-to-people ties between the United Kingdom and Laos and the role of education in supporting future leadership.
The visit underlines the United Kingdom’s continued support for Laos’ development priorities and its respect for the country’s independence and role in the region.
