EDL inks pact on 500kV transmission line from Attapeu to Cambodia

A power transmission agreement on the installation of a 500kV transmission line and construction of the Phouvong electricity station in Attapeu province, on the Laos-Cambodia border, was signed in Vientiane last week.
The system will enable 695MW of electricity to be transmitted to Cambodia.
The agreement was signed on October 13 by the Managing Director of EDL, Mr Chanthaboun Soukaloun, and a representative of a private company that has been granted a concession to carry out the project, Mr Wang Xianjun.
The US$149 million project will see the installation of a 500kV transmission line from the Phouvong station in Attapeu province to the Banna and Banthad stations, and across the Laos-Cambodia border.
Mr Chanthaboun said “Installation of the transmission line aligns with the socio-economic development plan and the strategic plan for the development of electricity generation of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, and is another step on the path to industrialisation and modernisation.”
“I believe that the success of this project will be an important contribution to the continued development of the electricity industry and pursuit of the path of industrialisation and modernisation in Laos. Electricity will play an increasing role in the development of people’s lives and their prosperity,” he added.
The power station and transmission line will open up opportunities for the development of electricity generation in the southern region, because there is a market to support Electricite Du Laos, which will be able to choose the appropriate energy service to supply power to Cambodia in line with the terms of the electricity purchase and sale agreement between EDL and Cambodia.
The transmission line will link the two countries more closely, Mr Chanthaboun said.
According to the VietnamPlus website, Laos has exported 445MW of electricity to Cambodia, which is scheduled to increase to 6,000MW by 2030.
In addition, Thailand, China and Singapore also import power from Laos.
