Lao student boots up for Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship in USA

A 21year-old National University of Laos student is packing her bags for the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship from July 30- August 2 in Anaheim, California, the USA after recently taking out the Microsoft Word 2013 country round.

Ms Phonelanin Kingkeo, who is currently studying at the Faculty of Engineering, National University of Laos, majoring in Computer and Information Technology in year four, said she appreciated winning the Microsoft Word Version 2013 competition this yea.

Ms Phonelanin Kingkeo ( second left ) joins Ms Sengdeuan Lachanthaboun ( third left ) and other competition winners recently.

As it was her first attempt at entering she never thought she would win. She first found out about the competition through a Facebook post in February which called on students from around the country to apply.

She thought what better way to use her skills and knowledge learnt at the Faculty of Engineering, so she decided to enter the competition.

“This year the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship country round attracted almost 200 students interested in showing their abilities and knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Power Point,” she said.

Ahead of the competition date she prepared plenty and concentrated her studies on revising her old lessons.

For the competition in May, there were three tests: Basic Testing, Expert 1 Testing and Expert 2 Testing.

Needless to say, she passed with flying colours even though she had her doubts.

Ms Phonelanin explained that she never thought she would pass as this year's competition had students who also competed in the event last year.

She and fellow winners of the Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Power Point categories, Mr Thony Bouttathep and Mr Oudomsavan Xayavong, all previously studied at Phonsavan High School in Savannakhet province and Rattan Business Administration College, and will be Laos' representatives at Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship 2017 in the USA.

She said they all appreciated receiving their medals and certificates from Minister of Education and Sports Ms Sengdeuan Lachanthabound at the National University of Laos club to attest to their success.

For her efforts, Ms Phonelan in received a mobile phone, 2.5 million kip cash, and IT course worth one million kip, along with a medal and certificate.

Next, she is preparing for the regional round of Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship 2017 in the USA which she hopes to win.

The championship is being organised by Certiport Company as a global competition that tests students' skill on Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point.

Top students are invited to present their respective country at the world championship; some countries' or region's students are required to participate in a regional championship with winners of that event continuing on to the overall world championship.

The competition has been organised for 16 years targeting young students aged 13-22 with participants from 86 countries joining this year.

The winner of Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship 2017 will receive US$7,000, Medal of Achievement, trophy, winner's certificate and other prizes provided by Microsoft.

Second place will get US$3,500, Medal of Achievement and winner's certificate while third place will get US$1,500, Medal of Achievement and winner's certificate.

In the future, Ms Phonelanin Kingkeo dreams of becoming a programmer and working in the IT sector after she graduates in order to assist the nation's human resource development.
