Vientiane school honoured for being drug free
Receiving recognition for being drug free shows that Nathien Secondary School in Sangthong district is one of the main allies in Laos’ fight against drug abuse.
The school not only offers an excellent curriculum but also takes part in the drug-free school scheme run by the Ministry of Education and Sports.
The scheme aims to prevent drug use in schools around the country and educates all students on the topic.
Before being recognised as being drug free in 2013-2014, teachers and students at the school, located in Nathien village, Sangthong district, worked very hard at practising and understanding guidelines and assessment conditions enforced by the ministry.

Deputy Principal of Nathien Secondary School, Mr Khamparn Southixay.

Deputy Principal of Nathien Secondary School, Mr Khamparn Southixay, says the school has conducted various assessments including inspections and offering prevention methods against the temptation of drug use and dealing on school grounds.
Receiving the drug-free accolade requires participation from all teachers and students, who work together to fulfil the guidelines and plans issued by the ministry.
Mr Khamparn said he was very happy and feels honoured that his school has received acknowledgement of its drug free status after he and his team worked so hard on the project.
The school has also been recognised as being smoke-free since 2015.
The school has three kindergarten classrooms, five classrooms for the primary school, and 15 classrooms for the secondary school.
More than 570 students are enrolled at Nathien School this year and the school has 56 teachers – four in the kindergarten, six in the primary school and 46 in the lower secondary school.
The school focuses on written Lao and English for children in kindergarten.
Teachers must have at least a high school diploma or a higher level of education but most importantly must enjoy working with children and display diligence in the classroom.
“I think that parents like their sons and daughters to attend Nathien School because they like our regulations and pedagogical practices,” Mr Khamparn said.
The school also provides other activities including art, music and sports competitions. The children use these skills to create colourful slogans for the campaign on the prevention of drug use.
The main challenge of Nathien School is infrastructure and access. The road from many of the students’ houses to the school is long and undeveloped.
In the rainy season it can flood easily and some children don’t have any means of transport to get to school.
