What are your thoughts on the importance of blood donations?

Every year the demand for blood increases among hospital patients, with the negative blood types being the hardest to obtain. This means more donors are needed so that stocks can be replenished regularly and a wider range of blood types is available. Vientiane Times asked around to get people’s thoughts on giving blood to help those in need.

People give blood to mark National Day last month at the Vientiane Center shopping mall.

Ms Khamboun, a resident of Xaythany district, Vientiane: I think everyone, both in Laos and around the world, should recognise the importance of donating blood and help each other in doing this. Many patients need blood each day so I donate blood often. I am very happy and proud to give blood because it means I can help someone who is urgently in need of blood, whether because of illness or an accident. I give my blood without expecting any compensation. I like to donate because I think it’s a good way to make merit. There are no dangers or side effects from giving blood and there are doctors there to monitor the procedure. Our body replenishes blood quickly and the amount we donate is only a small part of what’s circulating in our body.

Mr Bountaeng, an official in Sisattanak district, Vientiane: It’s good that more people in Laos are showing an interest in giving blood. I’ve read that demand for blood in Laos is high, with many sick people in need of blood each day. With some kinds of diseases, patients need new blood frequently. And road accidents happen daily and victims often need blood urgently. I think everyone should understand how important it is to give blood. People who are healthy should donate blood as often as possible. Every single drop of blood is life-saving so any donated blood will help others.

Mr Somephone Voralath, a resident of Naxaithong district, Vientiane: I’m interested in donating blood but I’ve never done it because I’m always too busy. It’s very important to donate blood because doctors say that many hospitals lack sufficient supplies. As we all know, our lives depend on blood. Who knows, a member of our family or a friend may need blood at any time if they have an accident. The amount of blood that is stocked for supply to hospitals depends on how many people pass a blood test; if more people pass the test, more blood is supplied. Everyone, especially healthy people, should donate blood, especially those who have negative blood types as these are rarer in the general population.

Ms Mettar Sonesackda, an employee in Vientiane: I think giving blood is very important and people who are healthy should give their blood for use by those in need. Many people worry that it’s dangerous in some way but they are not well informed. There should be more information and advertising about blood donation and clear explanations about the benefits of donating blood. If people get more information, they will be confident about safety and more will give blood. Doctors and the authorities should do more to convince the public about the benefits of giving blood.
