What do you think of Laos’ success at the Miss Universe pageant?

Ms Binly Duangpaserth, a vendor in Xaythany district: I saw something on facebook but I wasn’t sure what the news was because it was shared with many people so I clicked on the story and found out that Laos was an international success! I admire the designer for making such a wonderful costume for On-anong, who was able to convincingly display this colourful and elaborate symbol of Laos. She is a strong girl and looks very smart in the costume. To me, the photos of the gold costume indicate that Laos is a civilised country. Gold is an appropriate colour as it is seen in our temples and historical sites and is part of our traditional culture.

Ms Khuanjai, a student in Sisattanak district: It’s great and I’m happy to hear the good news. I offer my compliments to the designer who is clearly very talented. Before the win was announced I heard many people making negative comments about the costume, but they’re all quiet now. Laos is now quite famous after winning the Best National Costume category in the Miss Supranational contest in Poland earlier this year. Laos is a small nation but we’re good at certain things, which people in other countries don’t expect.

Mr Chanthalungsy, a vendor in Xaythany district:  I don’t know much about it, but it makes me proud to be Lao. I think the Lao aspects of the costume are really meaningful. Laos has a colourful culture and, in addition to this costume, the sight of Lao women wearing traditional dress is also becoming more widely known around the world. Next year I hope Laos will get this prize again on the world stage. One more thing, I would like young people to take an interest in design because this line of work can put you in the spotlight and has the potential to earn you a lot of money.

Ms Boinng Bounlom, a student in Chanthabouly district:  Like all Lao people, I’m beginning to take more interest in clothing and costume design. I would like to be famous and to develop top class skills. I think it’s a great career because you can be your own boss. I’m amazed that Laos was given this award by a panel of international judges. More than 90 countries took part in the pageant and competed hard for this prize, but the Lao costume was judged to be the best. It’s wonderful news for our country. I admire the designer who created this symbol of Laos for the international stage and was so richly rewarded.

Mr Vixay, a resident of Xaythany district: I didn’t know about this as I work in the countryside and don’t follow entertainment news. But I’m delighted to hear about it and I congratulate the designer on his creative talents. I also praise On-anong for her ability to wear such a heavy and awkward costume. They did Laos proud.
