Over 2,000 households in Inle Lake need humanitarian assistance

(Eleven) -- More than 2,000 households in 10 village tracts in Nyaung Shwe Township, Inle Lake, southern Shan State, are in need of humanitarian assistance and building materials, according to local residents.
A powerful earthquake struck Inle Lake at 12:52 pm on March 28, causing extensive damage to homes, monasteries, schools, and hotels. In addition, nearly 90 local residents were killed in the earthquake, according to reports.
“It’s even more terrifying than the flood. Many houses have been destroyed by the earthquake. This year’s Buddhist festival is uncertain. The Inle Bo Te is also tilted. Hotels are very damaged. The damage is expensive. A hotel in Thalay Sha costs about 200,000 baht per room, and 37 rooms, including the main building, are still submerged in water. We haven’t finished cleaning them yet. Kayla Sha is the worst. About 85 percent of the houses were destroyed and 41 people died in one village. In Kayla village alone, 8 people from one family died. It was afternoon and they were gathered downstairs when the upper floor collapsed. It’s very sad,” said an Inle resident.
According to the data collected by relevant officials on March 29, 2,035 households and 9,728 people are facing hardships in Mong Myaw village tract, Thalay Oo village tract, Hey Ya Ywa Ma village tract, In Chan Kay La village tract, Nan Thae village tract, Min Chaung village tract, Phan Phetchaung village tract, Ti Law village tract, In Tan village tract, and Kyun Gyi village tract in Inle Lake.
According to village lists collected by social welfare organisations in Inle Lake, 850 houses in Kayla, Sitta, Ohnpin, Shwepyithar, and Zaratgyi villages in the Kayla group, 220 houses in Nanpan Kyar Taw village, 61 houses in Nanpan Yele, 202 houses in Nanpan Pauk Pa, 250 houses in Ai Daunggyi, 115 houses in Seong Wa Gyi, 85 houses in Myaung Wa Gyi, 25 houses in Inyan, 155 houses in Thalay Oo Inn village, 158 houses in Nyaung Wun, 85 houses in Kyay Kyaw Three villages, 325 houses in Shama 14 quarters, 15 houses in Kan Kaung, and 20 houses in In Pa Khon, a total of 2,566 houses were damaged.
A resident of Thalay village in Inle Lake suggested that the real needs 5 days after the earthquake in Inle Lake are (1) carpenters to demolish and properly clean up houses, (2) rain shelters/bamboo huts for temporary living, (3) building materials, and (4) money.
