The medal was presented to the company’s Managing Director, Mr Vorapote Uchoepaiboonvong, by Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Mr Chansaveng Boungnong, at a ceremony held in Vientiane last week.
Mr Vorapote said the award reflected the Lao government’s recognition of the company’s commitment to responsible and sustainable practices.
“Throughout the development, construction and commercial operation of the Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Plant, our goal has been to elevate the standards of hydropower generation and serve as a regional benchmark in environmental, social and governance dimensions. We are deeply honoured and proud to receive this award,” he said.

The Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Plant is a run-of-river facility on the Mekong River with an installed capacity of 1,285MW. It began commercial operations on October 29, 2019, generating more than 7,400GWh of renewable electricity annually, helping to avoid around 3 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
The project contributes significantly to the region’s clean energy transition and enhances energy security for both Laos and Thailand.
To safeguard the Mekong’s ecological balance, the plant incorporates advanced features such as an integrated fish passage system for 143 species, a sediment discharge system with seven surface spillway gates and four lower outlet gates, and a navigation lock accommodating two 500-tonne vessels simultaneously.
These innovations have made the project a model of sustainable hydropower development in the Mekong Basin.
XPCL also supports social development in surrounding communities, providing land and infrastructure, vocational training for over 3,000 people in 15 villages, and promoting local employment.
Lao nationals now account for 62 percent of the company’s workforce, including 123 staff at the plant.
The award underscores the Xayaburi project’s role as a regional leader in sustainable hydropower.
XPCL derives over 98 percent of its revenue from electricity sales to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand under a 29-year power purchase agreement.
Its major shareholders are CK Power Public Company Limited (42.5 percent), Natee Synergy Company Limited (25 percent), EDL-Generation Public Company (20 percent), and Electricity Generating Public Company Limited (12.5 percent).
