Construction of National Games’ complex to continue, despite games postponement

Work will continue on the under-construction sports complex in Xieng Khuang province, planned for the 11th National Games in November, in anticipation of the event taking place in 2019 following its postponement.
An announcement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, dated September 14, stated that this year’s National Games, which were to be hosted by Xieng Khuang province, were postponed until November 2019.
The 12th National Games are now scheduled for 2023.
Deputy Director of the Elite Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Sports, Ms Phousay Phengphong, said the government would hold more talks to decide where the 12th National Games would take place.
Ms Phousay said Xayaboury province had been named by the government as the host of the 2023 National Games.
She said the government would also discuss which provinces would host the 2nd Lao University Games in 2019 and the 7th National Schools Games in 2020.
After Borikhamxay hosted the 6th National School Games in 2017, Saravan had been chosen as the location for the 7th National School Games.
An official at the Xieng Khuang provincial Education and Sports Department, Mr Phutthavan Manivong, said the province’s athletes would no longer live at the training camp in preparation for this year’s National Games.
Mr Phutthavan said that next year, the athletes would regroup and resume training for the games now scheduled for November 2019.
Xieng Khuang’s athletes have been in training camps since last month, but in view of the postponement they will take a break in their training schedule, as will teams all around the country.
The announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office also requested the Ministry of Education and Sports to review the organisation of all of the country’s main sporting events, including the National University Games and the National School Games.
Only provinces that already have adequate facilities, including a functioning sports complex, will be allowed to host national sports competitions. Provinces that don’t have the necessary facilities, but want to host such events, must use venues in Vientiane.
