Govt postpones National Games until 2019

The government has announced that it will postpone the 11th National Games from the planned date of November 11-21 until November next year.
An announcement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, dated September 14, stated that this year’s National Games, which were to be hosted by Xieng Khuang province, were postponed.
The announcement also requested the Ministry of Education and Sports to review the organisation of all of the country’s main sporting events, including the National University Games and the National School Games.
Following the Xieng Khuang Games next year, the government will not allow host provinces to build large-scale facilities to accommodate sports events, the notice added.
Only provinces that already have adequate facilities, including a functioning sports complex, will be allowed to host national sports competitions. Provinces that don’t have the necessary facilities, but want to host such events, must use venues in Vientiane.
The construction of buildings for this year’s National Games in Xieng Khuang province is well advanced, with some still being built and others nearly complete. The main stadium, which was to be used for the opening and closing ceremonies, is 87 percent complete.
The games were set to comprise 28 different sports in which thousands of athletes, coaches and officials from provinces, ministries and Vientiane were planning to take part.
