Lao powerlifter Pia grabs gold at Asian Para Games 2018

Laos’ history-making male parasports powerlifter in the Men’s 49kg category has now proved he is also the best in Asia.
Mr Pia Laophakdy captured a gold medal at the 12th Asian Para Games in Jakarta in Indonesia on Sunday.

He was the only competitor to lift 133kg successfully.
Some 11 weightlifters from 10 countries in two groups competed in the men’s 49kg event.
Prior to the 12th Para Games in Indonesia, Pia and fellow Lao lifters headed to Japan to compete in the Kita Kyushu 2018 Para Powerlifting Asia-Oceania Open Championships.
He was confident after managing to lift 136kg at a training camp in Vientiane before the Games.
Pia was able to lift 137kg at the Asia-Oceania champs to secure fourth place.
The result came after Laos’ Pia and teammates raised their games at a training camp in Japan from September 8-16 under the tutelage of top parasports powerlifting coach Mr Takashi Jo.
After returning from training in Japan and priorto the Asian Para Games, Pia said he hoped to lift over 137kg and finish in the top four.
In the end, a slightly lesser yet still impressive lift of 133kg was enough to secure the gold for himself, team and nation.
Teams of elite disabled athletes from 42 countries are competing in the Asian Para Games 2018 in Indonesia from October 8-16.
Laos’ delegation to the games includes 42 officials, trainers and athletes.
The nation’s competitors are taking on rivals in the running (100, 200 and 400metres), swimming (100metre’s freestyle and 100metre’s breaststroke), weightlifting and goalball events.
Lao Paralympic Athletes receive assistance via a parasports promotion-related development project via the Ministry of Education and Sports in collaboration with NGO Asian Development with the Disabled Persons (ADDP) supported by the people of Japan via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Jakarta, Indonesia’s Asian Para Games 2018 can also be seen an essential step for all hopefuls on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
