Lao U-19’s square up for maiden women’s championship qualifiers

Laos will compete for the first time at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-19 Women’s Championship 2019 qualifiers in Myanmar from October 24-28 with the team determined to put in a good showing.
The Lao women’s U-19 team features many players with previous junior international experience who cut the teeth competing at the Asean Football Federation (AFF) U-15 Girls’ Championship 2017 on home soil.
A squad of 25 players have been training hard at the Lao Football Federation (LFF) field since August 15 under experienced head coach Mr Vongmisay Soubouakham who led the national U-15 team at the girls’ 2017 championship but they were unable to progress past the first round.
The LFF will select a final squad of 20 players including three goalkeepers this month before departing for the championship qualifiers in Myanmar.
For the 2019 championship qualifiers, Laos is drawn in Group F with Myanmar, Iran and Palestine and many pundits believe they had a difficult task in passing the first round.
“Myanmar and Iran are both strong opponents in Group F but our target is to get as many points possible from this event,” Mr Vongmisay said.
Laos will play Myanmar at Thuwunna Stadium, Yangon on October 24 at 6pm, take on Iran on October 26 at 3pm and face Palestine on October 28 at 3pm.
Some 28 teams in six groups are competing in the championship 2019 qualifiers in Myanmar.
The Lao team will attend a training camp in Thailand from October 1-5 and play women’s teams from Khon Kaen and Surin provinces in friendly matches as part of their preparations.
