Lao ladies eye potential AFC U-16 Championship qualification

Laos has a good chance of progressing past the group stage first round after winning its first two matches at the 2019 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-16 Women’s Championship qualifiers in Mongolia from September 15-23.
Currently, the Lao team has six points and is in second place of Group B with two wins after defeating hosts Mongolian 4-0 on Wednesday and Pakistan 3-0 on Monday.
Laos will meet Hong Kong today with their final group match against India on Sunday. If Laos can beat both opponents they will progress to the second round of the Asian Football Confederation U-16 Women’s Championship qualifiers.
There are six groups for the championship qualifiers with the six group winners and two best runners-up advancing to the second round in Thailand in February next year. In the second round, the two group winners and two group runners-up from a total of eight teams qualify for the final tournament slated for September 2019 in Thailand.
India is currently in first place of Group B after beating Pakistan 4-0 on Wednesday and demolishing Hong Kong 6-1 on Saturday.
The Lao side trained and improved their skills at the J-Green Sakai Dream Camp in Osaka, Japan, from August 23-30 before attending in the Championship qualifiers in Mongolia.
The Lao team competed at the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship in Thailand in September last year but failed to make it past the group stage.
Many of the players gained valuable experience at the 2018 Asean Football Federation (AFF) U-16 Girls’ Championship in Indonesia in May where the team finished a commendable fourth.
