Lao students kick-off rugby exchange programme in Japan

Twelve high school students, two government officials and a representative from the Lao Rugby Federation left for Japan recently to participate in the Japan-Asean Youth Rugby Exchange under the framework of JENESYS 2018.
The group of Lao students, selected from outstanding students by the Ministry of Education and Sports, were in Japan during September 18-25.
During the event, the Lao students and their counterparts from other Asean countries visited Gotenba city in Shizuoka prefecture to attend Tag Rugby joint practice and played friendly matches.
They then travelled to Tokyo for a courtesy call on a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and visited historic landmarks and facilities. Students enthusiastic about sports were invited for the trip and they learned about diplomacy through sports and played Tag Rugby with students of the same age from Japan and other Asean countries.
The event was supported by the Japanese government with the aim of enhancing interest in rugby among Asean countries ahead of the 2019 Rugby World Cup to be held in Japan.
JENESYS is a people-to-people exchange programme between Japan and the Asia-Pacific region in operation since 2007. The Japanese government will invite about 120 young Lao people to the country during this fiscal year.
