Sepak takraw eyes University Games glory following King’s Cup success

The Lao men’s sepak takraw and takraw-silone teams are preparing for the Asean University Games in Myanmar this December following a very successful 33rd King’s Cup in Thailand last week.
The men’s and women’s teams succeeded in winning the nation’s first two gold in the world class tournament along with one silver and a bronze medal.
Despite the success, the sport’s local authorities are not confident they will be able to field a women’s sepak takraw team at the upcoming University Games in Myanmar.
“This year the Ministry of Education has a limited budget to support sporting teams for the games in Myanmar but we will wait for the ministry’s official announcement as to which students teams will be attending,” Lao men’s sepak takraw coach, Mr Chanday Phiathep said.
Mr Chanday said the men’s side is made up of university and college students who gained great experience competing at the 33rd King’s Cup in Korat, Thailand from September 23-30.
Next year, sepak takraw teams will compete at the Asian Beach Games to be hosted by India in May, 34th King’s Cup Sepak Takraw World Cup in Thailand and the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines.
At the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia last month, the Lao sepak takraw men won silver in the team event while the women won a bronze medal in their team event.
