Sepak takraw women win bronze at World Championships

The Lao team won a bronze medal in the women’s singles sepak takraw event at the 33rd Sepak Takraw World Championship 2018 in Thailand on Thursday.
Laos and and Indonesia were both awarded bronze medals in the women’s singles.
It is the first time for a Lao women’s team to win a bronze medal at the championship level.
The team lost to the Republic of Korea 0-2 (18-21 and 14-21) in the semi-final round of the women’s singles event.
Indonesia lost to Vietnam 0-2 (13-21 and 16-21) in their semi-final round matchup.
In 2011, the Lao team won a bronze medal in the men’s doubles’ sepak takraw event in the World Championship in Thailand.
In the women’s singles, the South Korean team was able to beat Vietnamese team 2-0 in the final round.
The World Championship 2018 is on from September 23 to 30 and there are more than 30 nations represented.
At the Asian Games in Indonesia last month, the Lao men’s teams (three teams) won a silver medal in the men’s team event, while the women’s team (four players) won a bronze medal in the women’s team event.
Both male and female members of the team had been hopeful of their chances at the Asian Games following their silver and bronze medals at the 2014 in the Republic of Korea.
Laos will compete in the sepak takraw and takraw-silone events at the Asean University Games in Myanmar in December, the Asian Beach Games to be hosted by India in May next year, and the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines.
