South-North run heads into Savannakhet on long slog for charity

The South to North Laos - Charity Run was expected to arrive in Kaysone Phomvihane City, Savannakhet province late on Wednesday after runners started from Saravan province at 5:30 am yesterday morning.

According to organisers, the South to North charity run from Attapeu to Phongsaly is the biggest feat of its type ever attempted in Laos. A group of dedicated runners are taking on 1,569 km within 16 days from October 7-26 to raise funds to support the provincial hospital in Attapeu and Luang Prabang Children’s Hospital.
After starting from Attapeu province on Sunday, the four main runners have already taken in Xekong, Champassak and Saravan provinces enduring hot conditions along the way but have been buoyed by the support of locals with many assisting to donate money.
Over the last three days, the runners have been able to collect more than 79 million kip with their ultimate target being 425 million kip for the two hospitals.
The charity run has been are able to cover about 100 km a day and have welcomed other participants to join them in each province.
The runners will continue from Savannakhet province and pass through Khammuan and Borikhamxay provinces before arriving in the capital. The charity run will then depart the city bound for the northern provinces.
Last year, the runners took to the road from Vientiane to Luang Prabang province to raise much needed funds for the Lao Friends’ Hospital for Children.
