Xieng Khuang preparing govt report on National Games rescheduling

Xieng Khuang provincial Education and Sports Department is currently writing a report on preparations for the rescheduled 2019 11th National Games’ which they will present to the government.
Deputy Head of the provincial Education and Sports Department, Mr Thongsy Phanthavong said the paper, highlighting Xieng Khuang’s preferred scheduling and preparations for the event, would be finished this month before being presented to the government.
“We want to hold the 11th National Games during March 2019 because the weather is good at that time of year. At the end of 2019, the government will have other activities including preparations for the SEA Games in the Philippines and work on celebrations for the Plain of Jars being listed as a World Heritage site,” he said.
An announcement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, dated September 14, stated that this year’s National Games, which were to be hosted by Xieng Khuang province, were postponed until November 2019.
Mr Thongsy said the province has spent more than 2 billion kip this year on preparations including the opening and closing ceremonies.
“However, we will use the remaining lead up time to improve arrangements for the 11th games if they are held in November 2019.
Xieng Khuang province’s sporting teams had begun attending live-in training camps last month for the games but the athletes have disbanded since the PM’s announcement.
Nevertheless, work will continue on the under-construction sports complex in Xieng Khuang province in anticipation of the event taking place in 2019 following its postponement.
Last month’s announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office also requested the Ministry of Education and Sports to review the organisation of all of the country’s main sporting events, including the National University Games and the National School Games. The 12th National Games are now scheduled for 2023.
Xieng Khuang province currently has 19 hotels with 726 rooms, 106 guesthouses, three resorts and 99 restaurants to welcome an expected 3,225 visitors to the games. Some 32 schools will be employed to host 9,377 athletes and coaches.
