At least 10 killed in Poipet casino blaze

(The Phnom Penh Post/ANN) -- At least 10 people were killed and 30 others injured in a midnight blaze that engulfed a high-end casino in Poipet town of Banteay Meanchey province on the Thai border on December 28.
According to Nhem Phoeng, chief of administration at the Poipet town hall, the flames had not been completely put out as of the morning of December 29.
Phoeng told The Post that more than 400 people, most of them Thais, got stuck at the Grand Diamond City casino.
“As of 9:10am, more than 10 people died, and over 30 of the injured were sent to hospital in Aranyaprathet district of Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province,” he said, noting that most the deceased were both Cambodian and Thai employees.
Kun Kim, vice-president of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), told reporters that commandos and helicopters had been sent to rescue those who were stranded in the casino, which is located next to the Poipet International Border Checkpoint.
Phoeng said authorities were still working to determine the cause of the fire.
