Three more Covid-19 patients die as Thailand sees 102 new cases

THAILAND (Nation multimedia) -- Thailand’s total number of Covid-19 patients rose to 2,169, with 102 new cases confirmed over a 24-hour period and three patients, including a foreigner, dying, Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the government's Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Sunday (April 5).

The cases can be divided into three groups.

The first group of 48 are connected to cluster cases - two had worked and been to entertainment venues, two had attended a religious ceremony in Indonesia and 44 had had close contact with others previously confirmed as infected

The second group comprised 42 people of whom 14 had just returned from overseas (13 Thais and a foreigner), two had close contacts to overseas returnees, 19 were working in crowded areas or close to foreigners (most of them in Phuket), and two medical staff.

The last group of 12 are being investigated on the source of the infection.

Meanwhile, 62 people have fully recovered and returned home.

Among the three who died was a 46-year-old man who had returned from London on March 22 and later got flu-like symptoms and high fever (39 degrees Celsius), a Swiss man, 82, and a construction worker.

The Swiss man had high blood pressure, heart disease, and dyslipidemia. He had attended a party in Hua Hin and then went to a bar in Bangkok. The 30-year-old male construction worker was reportedly an alcoholic who had visited Phatthalung and Surin provinces. He was admitted to hospital after coughing, having high fever, and vomiting blood.

As of April 5, the total number of confirmed cases in the country stood at 2,169 -- 1,472 are under treatment, of whom 22 are in a critical condition, 674 have recovered and been discharged, and there have been 23 deaths.

Globally, there are more than 1.2 million confirmed cases and around 65,000 deaths.
