Govt, Chinese firm ink MOU on agriculture project in Attapeu

The government has given the green light to the Hongkong Tianchi Group Corporation to carry out a feasibility study on a project that would combine agriculture and tourism in Attapeu province.

Officials from Lao ministries and China’s Hongkong Tianchi Group Corporation on Wednesday sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the agriculture project.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the project was signed on Wednesday between Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Mrs Khamchan Vongsenboun and Director General Manager of the Hongkong Tianchi Group Corporation, Ms Huang Qin.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ms Huang Qin said the project would support the government’s economic development goals and provide jobs for local residents.
“I hope the government and the relevant sectors in Attapeu will support this project,” she added.
“Our company promises to remain committed to bringing this project to fruition, creating income for local people, and supporting economic development in Attapeu province.”
The project will cost about US$50 million to carry out and will involve planting industrial tree species and crop cultivation over a period of two years in Nong Hin, Nong Muang and Mat Ka villages in Sanamxay district, on 5,100 hectares of land.
During the MOU signing ceremony, the Hongkong Tianchi Group Corporation handed over US$1 million to the Lao government as part of the agriculture project.
In June, the government also authorised Yunnan Puning New Energy Investment Co., Ltd. to carry out a solar power project in three villages of Sangthong district, Vientiane.
The scheme supports the government’s green growth development path through the production of clean energy. Solar power will be installed in Pak Thaep, Haiti and Hin Siw villages, which were chosen for their geographic suitability.
