The groundbreaking ceremony for the G-EVAW was held at the training centre of the Lao Women’s Union on Wednesday. This is part of the project to prevent and eliminate violence against women in order to mainstream gender into the national development agenda for Laos in 2020-2024.
The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Laos, Mr Jung Yung Soo, the Lao Women’s Union President, Dr Inlavanh Keobounphanh, the country director of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in Laos, Ms Kim Myung-jin, officials from the Lao Women’s Union and National Commission for the Advancement of Women, Mothers, and Children (NCAWMC), and the CEO of LG Consulting and Construction Sole Co Ltd.
Mr Jung Yung Soo emphasised the importance of human rights and the prevention of violence against women, and said the establishment of the center will be beneficial for every woman and girl, as it will help improve the comprehensive support model for survivors, and provide support for enhancing the capacity of policy-makers and counseling workforce of the violence against women system in Laos.
Dr Inlavanh said the support from the Korean Government has been very helpful in improving the quality of life of women and girls in Laos. Establishing the G-EVAW centre will strengthen the administrative capacity to prevent violence against women and eventually improve women’s rights, she said. The Government of the Republic of Korea, through KOICA, has been providing a grant of US$7 million to Laos since 2020 to strengthen the national capacity for the prevention of and response to violence against women. The construction of the centre for G-EVAW is expected to be completed in early 2024.
