Vientiane authorities tackle flooded roads in the city

Authorities in Vientiane have directed the concerned sectors to take concerted action to tackle problems that increase the risk of flooding of roads during heavy rains.
Heavy rainfall over the past few days resulted in the widespread flooding of streets and houses in low-lying areas in Vientiane and several provinces.
Local authorities in Vientiane, led by the Vientiane Mayor, Mr Atsaphangthong Siphandone, on Monday dispatched relief materials to inundated areas to help affected communities.

Authorities surveyed the areas with the most flooding, especially the villages along Road No 13 North, the villages of Nongneiw, Nongteng and Nonkeo, and the Lao-Oxy market in Sikhottabong district.
According to an official report issued on Monday, there are 29 flood-damaged areas in 25 villages with at least 839 families affected in the district.
At each place, the rain water condition decreased slightly by the afternoon of August 8. Some places remained under water because the rainfall increased and flooded low-lying areas, and the drainage system was blocked with garbage and mud, making it difficult to drain water.
The Mayor of Vientiane Mr Atsaphangthong Siphandone, directed the city administration and related sectors to pay close attention to monitoring and surveillance.
Mr Atsaphangthong directed authorities to fix the water drainage channels and the point where the water flows into the natural reservoir so that the water level does not rise again.
The authorities should focus on the main roads in the villages of Sikhay, Nongneiw, Nongteng and Nonkeo and Lao Oxy market, which are the most affected, he said.
Mr Atsaphangthong and a delegation surveyed the drainage system in Khok Hin village, and checked the water gates at Nong Da-kaoleiw village and Huay Moun Creek in Sikhottabong district.
During August 6-9, residents of nine villages were affected by floods in Thapangthong district of Savannakhet province.
According to an official report, the region received continuous rain for several days, resulting in water retention and flooded houses and agricultural areas along the Xepong river.
The concerned sectors provided assistance to people affected by floods to ensure basic safety. The water level in the area is now back to normal.
Some areas of the northern, central, and southern provinces are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rains and squalls until August 14.
The Meteorology and Hydrology Department has warned people to remain alert for flooding and landslides following several days of rainfall.
The Department has said the level of the Mekong and other large rivers around the country has risen because of the heavy rainfall.
