Australia provides AU$2million to improve
sanitation in Savannakhet
The Water for Women Fund set up by the Australian government has provided AU$2 million (more than 24.8 billion kip) to finance the Climate Resilient Rural WASH (CRWASH) services project in Laos.
The project aims to respond to challenges related to climate change and assist the government’s efforts to progressively improve equitable access to water and sanitation in 15 healthcare facilities and 50 schools in Phalanxay, Atsaphon and Champhon districts of Savannakhet province.

A Memorandum of Understanding on the implementation of the project was signed in Savannakhet province recently between the Director of the Savannakhet provincial Health Department, Dr Sengdao Sidalay, and Country Director of SNV Laos, Ms Anna Mutta.
The main activities will include conducting climate risk assessments for WASH systems, developing and implementing adaptation plans, strengthening the capacity of local stakeholders, and promoting learning and knowledge sharing on climate resilient WASH.
The project will take place from 2023-2024, according to SNV Laos.
The Australian goverment has provided financial support to Laos in many areas of development over past years, including providing AU$4.2 million to improve the health, gender equality and social inclusion of local residents in Savannakhet province during the period 2018-2022.
The Australian government also donated medical supplies worth AU$2.25 million to the Lao government for use in the response to the Covid-19 outbreak in 2021.
