International School of Laos successfully hosts 14th Inter-Schools Math Olympiad (ISMO XIV)

The International School of Laos recently hosted its enormous 14th Inter-schools Math Olympiad (ISMO XIV), an annual competition of challenging mathematical problems and puzzles to recognise students’ skills in maths.

This year, the Olympiad offered four categories, which gave opportunities to students in Grades 3 to 10 to win certificates, medals and gifts from ISL and sponsors, and the privilege to compete in the Copernicus International Olympiad Global Round in New York City, USA, in July this year.
ISMO XIV involved over 1,200 participants from nearly 75 public and private schools in Vientiane, Pakxe and nearby provinces. The International School of Laos constantly expands opportunities for local students, attracting more schools desiring to have their students compete in the Olympiad. ISMO XV is predicting to see more participants next year.
School Principal Mr Ulvi Shirinov said “Our Inter-Schools Math Olympiad has become the most anticipated local maths competition over the last 14 years. A rewarding experience for students and regarded as an opportunity to grow.”
Honoured guests at this year’s ISMO event included the Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Sports in Vientiane, Mr Bounthan Sengmany; Head of General Education and Sports in Vientiane, Mr Khunxay Sengsouny; Head of the Xaysettha Education Office, Mr Phommy Xayyasanh; Mr Bounty Sitthinongthong from the Saysettha Private School Association and Mr Shailender Puri, Marketing Manager of Vientiane Center.
“We sincerely thank the education sector and our sponsors for their dedication to education for youth in Laos. Undoubtedly all the students appreciate your encouragement and support. Thank you for your contributions to making this entire competition possible,” the ISL Administration Team stated.
An event such as this is a massive undertaking, and would not have been possible without the help of the sponsors. (Gold Sponsors: Vientiane Center and SunLuv; Silver Sponsors: LaoTelecom and Tigerhead Drinking Water; Bronze Sponsor: DK Books.)
“Mathematics is essential and significantly contributes to our daily lives. This competition teaches young people that all problems have solutions, which will prepare them to deal with complex logical problems in real life. Furthermore, participation in Olympiads fosters a competitive character in students, helping them cope with various aspects of a competitive environment,” the school’s Principal Mr Ulvi Shirinov said.
