The Japanese government is providing grant assistance for the benefit of students and teachers in Champassak province through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.
The scheme is supporting the construction of a new school and toilets, and the provision of furniture, at Nonenyang Secondary School, to improve the educational and sanitary environment.
The grant agreement was signed in Vientiane on Tuesday between the Ambassador of Japan to Laos, Mr Kenichi Kobayashi, and a representative of Champassak provincial authorities.
The signing was witnessed by the Governor of Champassak province, Dr Vilayvong Bouddakham, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Sports.
Dr Vilayvong said “This generous support is a very important contribution to the development of human resources and socio-economic development in Champassak province, especially for schools in Soukhouma district.”
Over the years, the government and people of Japan have provided a wide range of support including construction of a provincial hospital and school buildings. These have greatly contributed to the improvement of basic infrastructure, including better access to education by children, he added.
Ambassador Kobayashi said “We hope that this project will greatly improve the learning environment for students and the working environment for teachers, as well as the sanitary environment at the school.”
“At present, many Japanese companies based in Champassak are employing talented local workers. We would like to continue our support in a wide range of areas, including education, in Champassak in order to further nurture these talents and help raise the level of human resources,” he added.
Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects provides funds for relatively small-scale projects that directly benefit local residents by supporting economic and social development in developing countries including Laos.
The Japanese government has provided more than US$780,000 over the past five years to Champassak province to support education, health, infrastructure, and other areas.
In a shared effort to address regional disparities in socio-economic development, Japan will continue to support initiatives to improve the basic standard of living at the grassroots level in Laos, to ensure that “no one is left behind”.
