How businesses can deliver more benefit by addressing social issues in Laos

There are many companies in the profit sector that are deriving more benefit by hiring women with disabilities in Laos.
One of these is Lao Pride Inc., a Lao company that designs and manufactures fine diamond jewellery for international markets such as Europe and the United States.

The company is a leader in CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), with 60 percent of its employees being women and 11 percent being people with disabilities.
The CEO of Lao Pride Inc., Ms Daraphong Gnoutitham, said “People with disabilities are likely to stay with us for longer than others, so they are of more benefit to our operations. We plan to increase the employment rate of disabled people to 20 percent by 2030.”
The Tha-Muang branch of the Diep Vu garment factory, which reproduces clothes and exports them to Europe, offers internship opportunities to vocational trainees from the Lao Disabled Women’s Development Centre every year.
Branch manager Mr Ravi said “This has the effect of killing two birds with one stone as it provides work experience for trainees and builds up a high-quality workforce for our company.”
Additionally, Digital Divide Data (DDD), which generates profits by converting analog data into digital content and reprocessing information, is a social enterprise that preferentially employs the socially vulnerable, including women with disabilities.
Burapha Agro Forestry, which is a plantation and wood products manufacturing company, also provides layers of opportunity by employing people with disabilities in its plywood factory.
And ADDP (Asian Development with Disabled Persons), which successfully runs a baking and café business with hearing impaired people, are other organisations that hire disabled women.
The recruitment of women with disabilities with professional vocational training at the Lao Disabled Women’s Development Centre sponsored by GPL (Great Peace in the Lao PDR) can promote efficient management of human resources and improve the quality of production through stable human resource construction.
It’s time for more companies in the profit sector to hire more women with disabilities so they can earn more profit while also resolving social issues.
