Families displaced by mining operations move into new homes

More than 100 families in Ngeun district, Xayaboury province, have moved into new houses built for them by Hongsa Power Co., Ltd. after the company needed the land they lived on to extend its mining operations.
The 114 families who were displaced have been given new houses in Kiewngiew village.
Hongsa Power Co., Ltd. has built 136 houses and associated infrastructure to accommodate the families.
The new houses have electricity and water connections, while there are also roads, drainage, kindergarten and primary schools, a village office, a market, and a health centre in the new neighbourhood.

This is considered to be a complete infrastructure response for the 114 families displaced.
The new amenities were officially handed over in January this year at the resettlement office, ahead of the families’ relocation.
Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee’s Propaganda and Training Board, Ms Vilavone Phanthavong, reported on the resettlement scheme when she visited the area recently.
A representative of Ngeun district, Mr Sithanonxay Thongthepha, said the mining company had built 136 houses, with 10 being designed in one style, six in another style, and 120 in a different design. Each house has a kitchen and bathroom.
Hongsa Power continues to support Laos’ socio-economic and educational development. Every year, the company provides scholarships for children in Xayaboury province, mostly in Hongsa, Ngeun and Xienghon districts.
The company has also provided financial support for the government’s response to Covid-19.
