General election scheduled for February

The election of members of the National Assembly’s 9th legislature and the 2nd Provincial/Capital People’s Councils (PC) will take place on February 21, 2021, according to the National Election Committee (NEC).
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Spokesperson for the NEC Dr Somphou Douangsavanh said the date was in keeping with Article 32 of the Election Law and the Constitution.

According to Presidential Decree No. 200 signed on November 10, a total of 164 members out of 224 candidates will be elected to the National Assembly. People’s Councils will require 492 members, who will be elected from 789 candidates.
The number of members in the 9th legislature will increase to reflect the country’s growing population.
The election of members to the NA’s 8th legislature and the first newly-established people’s councils took place on March 20, 2016, comprising 149 NA members and 360 PC members.
Members of both bodies represent the rights and benefits of the multi-ethnic Lao people in parliament.
Below is a list of the number of candidates and actual number of members required to serve in the NA and PCs throughout the country:
Vientiane
18 out of 23 candidates will be elected as NA members.
31 out of 49 candidates will be elected as Capital PC members.
Phongsaly province
6 out of 9 candidates will be elected as NA members.
24 out of 38 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Luang Namtha province
6 out of 9 candidates will be elected as NA members.
21 out of 31 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Oudomxay province
7 out of 10 candidates will be elected as NA members.
25 out of 39 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Bokeo province
6 out of 9 candidates will be elected as NA members.
21 out of 31 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Luang Prabang province
10 out of 13 candidates will be elected as NA members.
33 out of 57 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Xayaboury province
9 out of 12 candidates will be elected as NA members.
32 out of 54 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Huaphan province
7 out of 10 candidates will be elected as NA members.
29 out of 49 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Xieng Khuang province
7 out of 10 candidates will be elected as NA members.
25 out of 39 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Vientiane province
10 out of 13 candidates will be elected as NA members.
31 out of 53 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Borikhamxay province
7 out of 10 candidates will be elected as NA members.
25 out of 39 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Khammuan province
9 out of 12 candidates will be elected as NA members.
30 out of 50 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Savannakhet province
20 out of 25 candidates will be elected as NA members.
39 out of 69 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Saravan province
9 out of 12 candidates will be elected as NA members.
28 out of 44 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Champassak province
15 out of 20 candidates will be elected as NA members.
35 out of 55 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Xekong province
6 out of 9 candidates will be elected as NA members.
21 out of 31 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Attapeu province
6 out of 9 candidates will be elected as NA members.
21 out of 31 candidates will be elected as PC members.
Xaysomboun province
6 out of 9 candidates will be elected as NA members.
21 out of 31 candidates will be elected as PC members.
