Oudomxay eyes new tourist attractions

Officials from Xay district in Oudomxay province plan to turn Phu Ya Kha mountain and viewpoint into a tourist attraction, according to the district’s Information, Culture and Tourism Office.
The site is one of five areas in Xay district for which feasibility studies are being carried out to assess their suitability as visitor attractions.
Oudomxay’s Information, Culture and Tourism Department plans to advertise Phou Ya Kha mountain and viewpoint, Ket stone forest (Pahin Ket), a stone bridge, Hin Pa Ya Ngu Yai rock and the Pouphieng viewpoint and open them up to the public.
Phou Ya Kha is located about seven kilometres from 32 Km village in Xay district and the viewpoint can be reached after a walk of about four and a half hours.
Eighteen officials from the Information, Culture and Tourism Office said Phu Ya Kha was a very attractive spot and that the huge rocks there could be said to resemble a snake’s head, heaven’s door, a turtle, and other interesting features. Ket stone forest (Pahin Ket) is a second viewpoint located about one kilometre from Phou Ya Kha and can be reached after walking for about an hour. The stone bridge is located 2.5 km from the second viewpoint and can be reached after a trek of about two hours.
Hin Pa Ya Ngu Yai rock is located about two kilometres from the stone bridge and can be reached in about two hours, while the Phouphieng viewpoint is located about 650 metres from the rock.
Oudomxay is one of the most attractive provinces in Laos, located in the upper north of Laos. It is also a place where tourists can experience untouched nature and culture. Some visitors have said it has the friendliest people and is the most peaceful place in the region. The province is also home to other places of interest, such as the Nam Kat waterfall, while the Singkham Buddha temple is one of the most striking in the province.
The beautiful Tad Talae waterfall is especially impressive after heavy rains. Oudomxay is also renowned for its tasty food such as sop pak, or vegetables cooked with sesame, ginger and chilli, and som seen sai mai phai, which is fermented pork mixed with chilli and garlic and packed into bamboo tubes.
Local ethnic groups are adept at making products from cotton and good bargains are available for discerning buyers.
Oudomxay is located 583 km from Vientiane and is accessible via all-weather roads and by air.
