Unitel named innovative technology company of the year

Unitel has been declared the co-winner of “The Innovative Technology Company of the Year” instituted by The Stevie Award - The 2021 International Business Awards®.
Unitel is honoured to be the first company in Laos to win this award alongside well-known technology companies from India, the USA, and Vietnam (more details on: https://stevieawards.com/iba/company-organisation-awards-winners-3).
According to Unitel, “The Innovative Technology Company of the Year” award has reaffirmed that Unitel is a leading enterprise in digital transformation in Laos, holding a pioneering position and creating new products/services to serve society and the people of Laos.
The award is telling of Unitel’s continuous efforts in creating and providing high quality technology products and services at par with international standards.

Fulfilling its mission with telecommunications services, Unitel is currently on a new goal to promote digital transformation in Laos.
Since 2019, Unitel has been a leader of digital transformation in internal operations as well as business services. The company was the first operator to successfully deploy the world’s modern IT technologies and services such as eSIM service (February 2019), NB-IoT technology (February 2020), 5G technology (October 2019).
Unitel was also the first network operator in Laos to cooperate with famous companies in the world such as Facebook, YouTube, WeChat to design products bringing various benefits to customers, including MyUnitel – a 24/7 digital application, which was liked by customers.
It has a total 1.4 million users, and an average app download of 50,000 times per month.
From 2019, the Lao government and businesses had trusted Unitel as a partner for technology solutions, software solutions, consulting and technology solutions for systems such as Data Centre, AI, Cyber security, Cloud (Camera, Storage, Server, VDI).
Unitel has implemented many key projects on e-governance for the country such as civil status management system, electronic document management system, Olympic Lao e-learning, Core Bank, National Payment Gateway (mobile phone money), and digitisation of the irrigation system.
During the fight against COVID-19, Unitel has supported the Lao government and people to fight the pandemic with pioneering technological solutions, participating in funding the vaccine passport management system for the Lao Ministry of Health, with a total funding value of up to 12 billion kip.
Rapid digital transformation was Unitel’s competitive advantage over others in Laos. From 2018 to 2020, the company promoted 4G technology by installing an additional 3,800 4G stations, expanding 4G coverage to 95 percent of the population, and has deployed more than 3,000 km of fiber optic cables.
Earlier, Laos was known as one of the “telecommunications white zones”. However, since the advent of Unitel, the number of people with mobile access has increased six times, from 18 percent to 95 percent.
Due to Unitel’s active contribution to building network infrastructure, telecommunications have covered the whole country.
Unitel has covered 100 percent of the villages in Laos. Unitel has made Laos one of the largest and most far-reaching telecommunications infrastructure countries in Asean region with the best 4G coverage and speed (download speed reaches 187Mbps/s) in Southeast Asia.
By the end of 2021, it is expected that Unitel will have an accumulated revenue of US$1.8 billion and pre-tax profit will be US$700 million.
Unitel has contributed over US$500 million to the government budget
and has made US$306 million profit in Laos telecommunications industry.
As the No. 1 telecommunications operator in Laos, Unitel has been pioneering in new fields, positioning itself as a leading technology company in Laos, at the forefront of digital transformation and e-governance. For its contributions Unitel has received many awards such as: in 2016, it was recognised as the most effective telecommunications brand in Asean according to Brand Finance, top 30 most valuable telecommunications brands in the region, and No. 1 in Laos.
In 2019, it received the First Class Ishala Medal and the First Class Development Medal from the President of Laos; the Third-Class Labour Medal was awarded by the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
In 2020, it won the Gold Award in the category “Best IT Products/Services for Government” from IT World Award and a co-award in the category “Innovation and Development of e-Government Services” from Stevie Awards Asia Pacific; for Civil Registration and Population Statistics.
In 2020, it also won a silver award in the category “Best IT products/services for finance, banking and insurance” from the IT World Award and a Silver award in the category “Innovative telecommunication products and services” from Stevie Awards Asia Pacific for U-money e-wallet service.
