Nam Theun 2 set to contribute US$2 billion to Laos

Nam Theun 2, one of Laos’ most significant hydropower projects in Laos, is expected to generate approximately US$2 billion to the government of Laos over the 25-year concession period.

The figure was cited during a press conference on January 15 to launch the project’s 15th anniversary celebrations.
The event highlighted the project’s remarkable achievements and its commitment to driving sustainable development in Laos.
Nam Theun 2 has been a cornerstone of renewable energy production in Laos since its commercial operation commenced on April 30, 2010.
Speaking at the press conference, theChief Executive Officer of Nam Theun 2, Mr Marc-Antoine Rupp, expressed his gratitude to stakeholders and shared the company’s milestones. “Today, 15 years later, Nam Theun 2 is an industry leader, a responsible corporate citizen, and a driver of sustainable development in Laos,” he said.
Nam Theun 2 operates a 1,080MW hydropower facility in Khammuan province, with 95 percent of its electricity exported to Thailand and the remaining 5 percent allocated for domestic consumption.
Between 2010 and 2024, the project generated over 83,000GWh of renewable energy, exemplifying its role as a regional energy hub.
Beyond energy production, the company has made significant contributions to social and environmental development.
From 2005 to 2035, approximately US$230 million will be allocated to social and environmental programmes, including the resettlement of Nakai Plateau communities and the establishment of the Nakai-Nam Theun National Park.
Mr Rupp said “Nam Theun 2 is more than just a hydropower company. It harnesses the power of nature to elevate livelihoods, deliver vital infrastructure, and create a better future for Lao generations to come.”

Nam Theun 2’s achievements are the result of robust partnerships with stakeholders.
The project, which represented the largest foreign investment in Laos at its inception, brought together 27 financial institutions, including international commercial banks and multilateral agencies.

This collaboration ensured that social and environmental safeguards were upheld throughout its development.
Mr Rupp said “I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the Government of Laos for its unwavering support from the inception of the project. Nam Theun 2 stands as a model for sustainable hydropower development in Laos.”
The company’s shareholders—Electricité de France, Electricity Generating Company of Thailand, and Lao Holding State Enterprise—have also played a crucial role in ensuring the project’s success.
To commemorate its 15th anniversary, Nam Theun 2 has launched a series of activities in partnership with the Bluegrass Design Group (BDG). The campaign includes nationwide advertisements and events highlighting the project’s achievements.
The key events planned for 2025 include a grand celebration in Vientiane marking the 15th anniversary of the Commercial Operation Date, attended by senior government officials and stakeholders on April 30, and the Nakai Festival in Khammuan province, hosted in collaboration with the Nakai District Administration in October.
This event aims to foster community engagement, promote tourism, and boost regional socio-economic development.
These initiatives reflect Nam Theun 2’s commitment to celebrating its legacy while strengthening ties with local communities.
As Nam Theun 2 looks to the future, it remains committed to upholding the highest standards of safety, sustainability, and ethics.
The company employs approximately 260 people, 97 percent of whom are Lao, and aims to remain an attractive employer in the energy sector.
Mr Rupp added “This 15th anniversary marks a new chapter for Nam Theun 2. We will continue to be a close partner to the Government of Laos and support the country’s development, ensuring that we remain a reference in the hydropower industry.”
