President advises Saravan leaders to address economic problems, boost community development

President Thongloun Sisoulith last week paid a working visit to Saravan, when he urged the province’s leaders to do more to tackle economic problems, encourage children to attend school, and assist residents to adopt more productive farming methods.

President calls for Saravan province to address economic difficulties, increase school enrollment.

Improved crop cultivation techniques would boost yields and bring in more income for farmers, President Thongloun said.
The leader, who is also Party Secretary General, advised provincial leaders to educate local government officials and residents about the work of the Party and government so they had a deeper understanding of politics and a strong belief in the Party leadership.
In a speech he delivered on January 15, the President praised the success achieved under the province’s socio-economic development plan, which had improved the quality of life for people in Saravan province. Improved infrastructure has been a strong contributor to development in the province, he added.
The Governor of Saravan province, Dr Daovong Phonekeo, said sound economic growth had been recorded and Gross Domestic Product had reached 8,488 billion kip, equalling 99.39 percent of the target figure.
Provincial leaders had attempted to tackle the problem of student dropout in primary and secondary schools, improved the quality of teaching and learning in schools, upgraded healthcare facilities, and broadened the knowledge of doctors, Dr Daovong said.
On the same day the President visited a modern rice mill in Nakhamnon village, Songkhone district, Savannakhet province.
The rice mill cost US$8 million to build and can process 5 tons of rice per hour. It is currently operating on a trial basis and contains four drying machines that can dry about 120 tons of rice a day.
The President and his delegation also met with residents of Nakai district in Khammuan province.
He advised provincial authorities to curb the drug trade, ensure the protection of forests and the natural environment in the Nakai-Nam Theun National Protected Area, and encourage all children to attend school.
